Senioritis Spreads Through Northern

After three grueling years in high school, senior year arrives.  It’s the best year right?
It very well may be, but teachers say that does not give seniors an excuse to be let off the hook for academics.
Most students in the senior class say that they shouldn't have to do as much work as the underclassmen because it is their last year. Even the senior classes most highly ranked students don’t see the point in doing work anymore.
Varun Nandamudi (‘15) gives us some perspective when he says, “Well I already got into college, so why do I have to do any of this (stuff)?”
Olivia Seely (‘15) agrees with him when she says, “We've been through enough torture… It’s so hard to even show up anymore.”
Some of these explanations may be more of the extremes of how seniors feel, so it is only fair to give some more rational insights as well.
“I feel like seniors don’t think they should have to do as much work because their futures are so close,” said Tina Nandi (‘15).
Nandi’s advice does give some food for thought. Most seniors already know where they’re going to college so it seems that what is still here for us to learn doesn’t seem all that important.
Teachers also realize senior year can be difficult.
Mrs. Manley says “Every year I see how off task seniors get and how much motivation they lose and I have to remind them that high school isn’t over and they still have a couple months here.”
When Mr. Black was asked how he felt about the senior classes work ethic he answered “It’s pitiful, but understandable… I can remember the struggles of senior year vividly.”
Academics isn’t the only area seniors are slacking in. They also believe they can use the “senior excuse” to skip classes or get away with actions that other classes get in trouble for.
“I can not tell you how many seniors I’ve caught in the staff lounge, buying our soda,” says Mrs. Hartson.
“My attendance rate for seniors is at an all time low,” says Mrs. Dunham.
So ask yourself this, should seniors get a pass for their laziness or should the teachers be harder than ever on them to prepare them for the future?
