The Port Huron Northern Varsity and Junior Varsity Quiz Bowl teams have had a perfect season so far. They have gone through the season with fifteen wins and zero losses.
This is not unusual for the teams, which both boast some of the brightest students that Port Huron Northern has to offer.
Two members of the varsity team, Yusef Kunji (‘15) and Matt Corsetti (‘16), believe that this is normal for both of the teams.
“Both the JV and Varsity teams always do tremendously well during league play,” said Kunji.
“Last year, the team only lost two matches [during league] play,” said Abhishek Tekemulla  (‘17) “Obviously, we want to beat that this year, and that is a nerve wracking challenge, but that is the goal”
According to Sophia Ahmed “,Our competition has been amazing this year. [Port Huron High] is doing really well, and Imlay City is big competition as well.”
The key to both teams’ successes is to continue fighting throughout the entire match.
“We were down forty to zero against Imlay City but we made a comeback,” said Sophia. “,We just have to keep our focus and make sure we get those bonus questions right or we will fall behind.”
While the junior varsity team just deals with league play, the Varsity team will continue on to the regional, and then [hopefully] the state meet.
Led by starters Aishah Ahmed (‘16), Robbie Bacheller (‘16), Corsetti and Kunji, the team faces the worst competition at the state round.
“The Varsity team usually does very well in the regional. Once they get to the state tournament, that is when it gets challenging because they face all these top-notch private schools,” said Ruchi Wankhede (‘17).
At the tournaments, the teams rely on each other for the support. “When we have so many smart, talented students, it is good to see that we are readily supporting each other and hoping for the best,” said Wankhede.
“One issue that [Varsity] has is the, obviously, really competitive rivals,” Aishah said. “To have a record that we do speaks highly of the intellectuals we have here at Port Huron Northern.”
