April Fools Day, Fooling People

Feature
By Jon May
Husky Herald Reporter
April 1st is a day that lets all pranksters run free. It lets them roam and place jokes on people as much as they want.
On April 1st 2014, YouTube; a popular website that lets you upload videos, decided it would be funny to pull a prank on the world. What prank? Well, by making up a fake trends video of 2014.
These fake trends are either parodies made from actual trends that have occurred over the years, or just random trends that would never catch on. Or would they?
These trends would include: Clocking, Kissing Dad, The Glub Glub Water dance song, Chicken High Five,
Flash Sobbing, and Guitar Tricking.
I wanted to know what the student body thought of these fake or un-fake trends. “I thought that all of them were stupid, I don’t like when YouTube does their April fools jokes” said Paige Byrnaert (’14). “The only one that was actually worth my time was the Kissing Dad trend”
YouTube isn’t the only big corporation to pull a spoof video this April fools. Another big company that
pulled a joke video was Google.
Every year Google takes one of their many features and adds a special feature that is so bizarre it drives people mad. “That’s awesome the way they created it, but as for it not being real that makes me angry” said Tom Coop (’14).
This year they came up with the idea for a Google Maps spoof, involving catching Pokémon. They would have people, open up their Google maps application on their smart phone, and then Pokémon would show up. Then each person would move their Google map around the world until they caught every Pokémon.
Reddit was another corporation to also pull pranks on the world. “It was fantastically stupid” said Brendan Maxwell (’14) a student who regularly uses Reddit.
Reddit also decided they would play jokes on their subscribers by showing a new way to up vote, down vote, and scroll through their pages. “I wish they wouldn't play jokes like that, it would be cool if they were real.” Maxwell said.
The question that still needs to be answered is if these supposedly “fake trends” will catch on or if these massive companies actually do have the capabilities to turn these virtual fake jokes into reality. I guess we will have to wait until next April fools to be posed by these same exact questions.

How To Survive Bear Attacks

Humor
By Thomas Steinhauer
Husky Herald Reporter

Have you ever been in contact with a dangerous bear? Did not know how to react? Well, this article will tell you what to do.
Bears will eat anything, even you, so you have to be prepared! Just follow these steps and you’ll be safe.
Step one: Never carry raw meat in your pockets, make sure it’s cooked. For reasons unknown, raw meat will attract the bear in your neck of the woods.
Trinidad James
Step two: If you encounter a bear make very sudden movements. Make eye contact and growl at the bear. Show teeth!
Step three: Never sing Trinidad James aloud. Bears can hear that from a mile away.
Trinidad and bears have a huge beef. All bears want to kill Trinidad.
Now that you know the basics, it’s time to get into the advanced tactics of how to protect yourself from dangerous bears.
All bears are dangerous but the two most dangerous bears are the Polar Bear and the Golden Grizzly.
Grizzlies can live up to 25 years in the wild and get up to 1199.31 lbs. on average.
Polar bears can get even bigger, up to 1500 lbs.! Also they can swim 6 mph. That’s crazy!
So if you ever see a bear you can’t out run it. It will be able to out run and out swim you.
Most of the bears in PHN are in and around the PAC, mostly in the wilderness where there aren’t too many people.
Although due to overpopulation, bears have been getting closer and closer to people.
Last week, a bear was seen in Mrs. Hohf’s classroom.
Northern is a good place to see bears! But be sure to not get too close to one or they’ll get you!

What's up with all this Nonsense?

Opinion
By Thomas Steinhauer
Husky Herald Reporter

Are you sick of all the nonsense in your very own school? Are you sick of going to class and learning nothing? Are you sick of going to lunch and having to wait hours, maybe days, upon end for a simple meal? Well it is time you do something about it.
Jordan Callahan (’15) says, “I don’t even go to school because I don’t learn anything.” Others disagree, such as Grover Cox (’15). Cox stated, “You will only learn if you try. The teachers do their best to put students in the position to succeed. It’s up to the student if they want to try.
The question we are all asking is, is there actually nonsense in the school?
Students seem to be a big part of the nonsense in today’s world. The lunch is one problem. To be specific, it's the length of the lines. Students are puzzled about why they are so long.
One student, Zack Sommers (’15) says, “The lines are probably so long because of the cutting.  If people were patient the lines would be way better.”
That would explain why you seem to stay in the same place for what seems like ever.
That is a theory that is worth taking seriously. Others say that the lines are long because there are too many people. Who knows which one is right?
Clinton Massey (’15) says, “That there are too many people in C lunch. If some of the people from A lunch went to C the problem would be fixed.”
Others think that the freshman should not get their own lunch. Maybe if the four grades were spread out into the three lunches equally, they would not be so hectic. These are all great solutions to what seems to be the biggest nonsense problem at Port Huron Northern.
So between lazy students, crazy students, and just your average students, there is a lot of nonsense in Port Huron Northern High School.
The events range from paranormal sightings to long lunch lines, but if we work together as one, we can change the nonsense into positive and productive behavior.
